These 5 simple credit crunching steps will save you money every week. Modern women cringe at the thought of “housekeeping”, but living within a budget isn’t so bad once you get used to it. The old principle of living within your means, much praised by the worthy Victorians, does after a while become part of life.

In the last decade, we have seen an escalation in borrowing and a complete disregard of morals and common sense from banks. The advice from the top is to spend what little credit we have left to reduce the effects of the global recession. Does that make sense to you? When the dust settles and we all look around to see the fall out from the next few years, the little people will be the ones left out in the cold. The everyday Joe’s or Joanna’s who don’t have a grossly inflated bonus scheme in the bank need to take charge of their destiny and decide to take small steps to help stay solvent until sanity is restored. You never know, you might like your new lifestyle so much that when the credit crunch is a distant memory you with still be following the 5 simple steps.

  1. Make a list of the basic items you need like bread, milk and sugar, then look for this week’s loss leaders to fill the rest of the week’s meals and snacks.

  2. Ignore branded goods and look for supermarkets’ own brand ranges.  Most are of a good quality and are much cheaper. If there is a branded item you particularly like, wait until it’s on special offer and stock up. Coffee and cornflakes are the two branded items I always wait and buy on offer.

  3. Do a monthly freezer shop and rather than stocking up on microwave meals buy meat and frozen vegetables so you can plan meals in advance.

  4. Start shopping in Lidl, Netto or Aldi. All of these shops provide really good value for money and the quality is also very high.  However in this uncertain economic climate all the supermarkets are cutting prices.  So actually at the moment the major supermarket might actually be your best bet so savings.

  5. The last tip might seem a bit strange, but always works for me; don’t pay by card. If you have a set amount of cash in your purse, impulse purchases are impossible to make.

If all this takes the fun out of shopping for you, remember that this system has its own rewards. Each week you have money left over, you can follow my Mother’s system and put the money in a jar so you always have money for a rainy day or treat.
