Easy Chocolate Marble Cake
This is my special cake I’ve been making it for years and never had it go wrong. The cake looks good and can be customized for any occasion. When you cut the cake and people see the marbling everyone thinks it must be a complicated recipe. This is a very easy cake to make. I hope you enjoy it.
Ingredients
Cake
2oz plain chocolate chopped into pieces
2 tablespoons cocoa
2 tablespoons water
6oz self raising flour
6oz margarine (soft sunflower)
6oz granulated sugar
3 tablespoons golden syrup
3 medium eggs (or 4 very small eggs)
Icing
2oz margarine (soft sunflower)
2 tablespoons water
6oz plain (or milk if you prefer) chocolate
To make the cake
-
Heat oven to 140C or gas mark 3 the cake will take about an hour to cook, but as each oven is different then start testing after about ¾ of an hour. Grease and flour an 8 or 9 inch cake tin.
-
Place cocoa, chocolate and water in a pan on a low heat and stir until melted. Then set aside to cool.
-
Beat together flour, margarine, sugar, eggs and syrup until fluffy and pale.
-
Divide the mixture into halves. Add the chocolate mixture (step 2) to half of the mixture.
-
Starting with the chocolate cake mixture place a tablespoon into the cake tin then a tablespoon of the plain sponge. Alternate between colours going around the outside then fill the centre with 2 or 4 spoon full still alternating colours. Then make the second layer by doing the same again putting plain sponge on top of the chocolate and vice versa. Level the surface carefully and place at the centre of the oven.
-
Bake for about an hour until the sponge springs back when gently pressed, if you’re not sure then take a clean knife and insert gently into the centre of the cake if it comes out clean then the cake is cooked. Allow the cake to rest for a few minutes then run a knife gently around the edge and turn out onto a wire rack to cool.
To make the icing
-
Place the butter, water and chocolate in a small pan and gently heat over a low heat, stirring until the chocolate has melted.
-
Cool until the icing begins to hold its shape. Place the now cold marble cake on a serving plate and spoon icing over the top and spread around the sides until you have a finish that you are happy with. (Tip: don’t over work it, if the finish needs help grate some chocolate over the top.)
-
Finally take to table and cut a slice. This cake is one to impress as most people imagine marble cake is difficult and clever.
